BUI NGOC TUAN

THE SONG OF NIGHTS

It’s only the loneliness
when the dark of night returns in frosty chill
how do you know the burden of memory
the memory of time lost -
heavy in my heart

time is the sharpest knife
cut through all sweetest dreams

Oh! Memory – Oh! Memory

memory is a brutal devil
exiles me to the deepest dark of loneliness
in the frostily chill night

when the fog spreads over the lake
and the trees drop their golden tear
silently

when the moon dies behind the cloud
when the hill is covered with emptiness

all that left is the loneliness of nights
(and me)

BALLAD OF
THE 1975 BLACK SPRING

near the end of that spring the violent storm suddenly rush down
we were taken apart
as the gulag walls rose up around our country
and everyone tattered liked a small boat gobbled up by the enrage storm
the sky was falling
the ground cracked open
and came the hell slugs
brought more cruelty in ruthlessly destroyed your spring time
while I could do nothing

why peace brought more cruelty in than war?

there was nothing I could do
the ocean had stormed up
from the jungle savage animals rushed down
slaughtering, robbing, destroying, burning…

life that were beautiful liked flowers no more
tattered under the savage feet

near the end of that spring dark night suddenly covered our world
and the whole country became a giant prison
I was separated from you as I was separated from our past
I was separated from you
as though a huge ocean was between us
as though the river of time had flown me far away from you

where is the beautiful past
in our garden with those warm summers warm and those sweet spring now?
I was separated from you when our country became the gulag
when peace brought more cruelty in than war

near the end of that spring the furious storm suddenly rush down
I became a lost man
wounded
body and soul
with nothing left
when life became the distant past
no way home – no way home
no way home
you are now live in total darkness
I am now mad as though my eyes will explore

near the end of that spring the violent storm suddenly rush down
your life was robbed
your soul was murdered

where is now our beautiful life past?
when the savage animals burnt down your garden
when peace brought more cruelty in than war

I could not say anymore
our wounds never heal
ever…
there was nothing left as our blood continued to flow out

near the end of that spring the furious storm suddenly rush down
I only have my nothing left
you only have yours
like our country was slaughter
one day late that spring
when the violent storm suddenly rush down

and peace was crueler than war
(but no one outside the gulag know that)

NEW ORLEAN

don’t you remember
the music filling Bourbon street
and some one dance

the sky is so deep
the moon’s hanging loose
and the night is so sweet

I didn’t know of life endless crossroads
that the train stops at many stations
for we share but a short journey

the crowd disappears
the world fades away
when I look into your eyes
and the night’s so sweet.

GOOD BYE

Hold you one more time
I die
          piece
                    by piece
when you say good bye

Oh! How beautiful
The golden river of moon light
Flows softly on your shoulders
And I so want to cry

Turn around
          turn around
                     and go
All that remains is your scent in the stillness of night
Standing here I turn to stone
And forever treasure your sweet smile
